Arena is a picturesque whitewashed town which straddles a hillside within excellent mountain landscape, set in the lovely Axarquia locale. The town was first settled by the Moors who exploited its area in prized rural environment. The Moorish impact is clear in the tight boulevards and normal Moorish squares. There is an old olive factory and painting made by the well known pottery craftsman Virgilio González. In the town there is an amazing church-mosque and the town hall.The village is located inland from the Mediterranean coastline 10 kilometres from Velez-Málaga, 14 kilometres from the coast, and 67 kilometres from the centre of the city of Málaga. The resort of Torre del Mar is only 15 kilometres away which takes about 30 minutes by car.
