The region of Limburg is the easternmost province of the country of Belgium. This province is one of five areas which make up the Flanders region. The Meuse River is the eastern border of this province. This river separates Limburg from the Dutch province of the same name. The province covers a total area of about 2,400 square kilometers with 44 sub-divisions. The municipality of Voeren was added to Limburg in 1977. It is geographically separated from the region. The capital of the province is the city of Hasselt. The old Roman city of Tongeren in Limburg is considered as the oldest city in Belgium.
