The Bay Islands is an island group located off the coast of Honduras. Collectively, the islands form one of the 18 Departments of Honduras. The capital region of Bay Islands is Roatan, which is located on the island of Roatán.
The island’s total surface area is close to 250 km2. The islands are comprised of the following separate groups:
Swan Islands, the most northerly island is located 120 km to the south
Moving to further south, Cayos Cochinos is situated. The Bay Islands has eight islands and they have been administered as a department of the Republic of Honduras since 19th century.
Caribbean Sea is close to Gulf of Honduras, located next to the mountainous mainland.
