Recently renamed to Kalburgi, which means the stone city, Gulbarga is a popular historical town in Karnataka. The district went under clash between the Rashtrakutas and the Chalukyas, of whom the last took control of the region and ruled it between the sixth and the twelfth hundreds of years. Gulbarga as we probably are aware it today was established by the Bahmani Sultans in the fourteenth century and was later governed by the Nizams of Hyderabad through the eighteenth to the twentieth century. The town is known for its various temples and tourist attractions.
