EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EL ROCIO
Feel the genuine soul of El Rocío...The journey starts with a walk through the antiquated pathways that converge around the River Guadalquivir. From dawn to dusk, a shroud weaved with the moon and stars covers the small town of El Rocío. Join the pioneers, went with all through the whole camino (travel) by the drumming, to the musicality of the drums and the sound of the flutes. In expansion to the drumming, firecrackers stud the sky, directing and calling the stragglers and, behind them, the hermandades (brotherhoods) with their staffs and flags, in a cloud of fringes, polka dots and flowers. The most typical method for doing the journey is on horseback, in one of the carretas (finished wagons) or by walking, venturing through the marshlands and resting out in the open. On Sunday night nobody rests in anticipation ofbeing able to enter the church and join in the procession of the Blanca Paloma (White Dove), by which the Virgin of El Rocío is known. The most energizing snapshot of all is the salto (jump), when the general population of the adjacent town of Almonte enter the sanctum, jumping over the railings, and lead their Virgin in parade through the town.
